Kejriwal could get interim bail due to Lok Sabha polls, says SC
In a recent development, the Supreme Court has indicated that it may consider granting interim bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on May 7.
The court's decision comes after Kejriwal's arrest on March 21, which raised questions about the timing, especially considering the proximity to the announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha election schedule. The Enforcement Directorate was expected to address these concerns today.
During the hearing, Senior Advocate A M Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, highlighted the importance of "life and liberty," prompting the court to seek a response from the probe agency regarding the timing of the arrest. Justice Khanna expressed concern over the time gap between the initiation of proceedings and the subsequent arrest.
The case revolves around alleged kickbacks received by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leaders in connection with the implementation of the now-scrapped 2021-22 Delhi excise policy. The Supreme Court's consideration of interim bail for Kejriwal reflects the significance of the matter, especially amidst the electoral process. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving situation.
